Argentina Beats Canada in Copa America Opener

Defending Champs Secure 2-0 Victory

Atlanta, GA - Argentina began its defense of the Copa América title with a 2-0 victory against Canada at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Monday night.

Match Highlights

Lionel Messi scored the opening goal for Argentina in the 33rd minute, converting a penalty kick after a handball by Canadian defender Alistair Johnston. Lautaro Martínez added a second goal for Argentina in the 50th minute, tapping in a cross from Ángel Di María.

Canada had a few good chances to score but could not find the back of the net. Alphonso Davies came close in the first half, but his shot was saved by Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.

"We knew it would be a difficult game, but we were able to control the match and create chances," said Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni. "We are happy with the result and the performance."

"We are disappointed with the result, but we played well against a very good team," said Canada coach John Herdman. "We can take a lot of positives from this performance and build on it for the rest of the tournament."
